Unable to reach the end-users

This is an outsourcing project from the other company. The requirements from them are ambiguous, and we are unable to reach the real end-users.

Tight schedule

The final web and app UI design needs to be delivered in one month. The requirements change time by time, so I need to preserve the flexibility of the design.

No competitive products to refer to

Since the product is for specific usage, there is not any similar product we can find on the market.
Work Process
Site Map & Specification
I sort the requirements from the client’s proposal and collect the expectation from the clients. Then draft a rough skeleton of the system, discussing the possibility of implementation with engineers. We identify the data format and the system structure together. Based on all data I collected, I write down the software specification to confirm everyone comes to a consensus. It needs to be updated continuously as a few problems emerge and requirements change while developing.
Wireframe / Lo-fi Prtotype
The app users are elder farmers who probably have less experience with digital products. Although I am unable to reach the farmers in Yulin County, I still conduct a few user testing with elder people.
Various meters and sensors may be added in the future, so I design a dynamic dashboard for feature extensions. It allows users to add the data panel they value and adjust the panel size they like.
UI kit
I referred to Water Resources Agency's color scheme and created a design guideline for the website and app. Since most of the components are based on the Material design, it helps the engineers to develop faster. The target users of this App are elder farmers, so I chose a relatively large font size as the initial size.

Results &Takeaways
The typical design process can not be 100% applied to real work. To launch the product on time, I need to make trade-off decisions. In this case, I have learned that I have to consider all stakeholders but not only users. I am glad that the product successfully launched on time. Based on previous experience from our team, if we do not have a clear specification, the project will be endless. The specification document helps the communication between our team and clients.
